As you look at getting 2021 on the right foot, don't forget the importance of balancing your life. The following 10 actions are keys to a world of higher productivity, less stress, being in the present moment, living a happy and healthy life.
1. Understand the value. Do an exercise where you are reminded daily of the importance of being more in control of your time. The average female lives to 81 and males 78. Subtract your age from those life expectancies to get the number of years left. Multiply by 365 days to get a total number of days. Then purchase one small and inexpensive item for each day you calculated. Put them in a storage unit and pull one out at the end of each day. This process will be a visual reminder of each precious day you have.
2. Determine your present state. For a week keep a record of where you are spending your time. Look at each task and assign it to one of 4 categories listed below. Then determine the percentage of time you spend on each.
Career- the time you spend in or growing your career Family- the time devoted to your extended family and close friends Self- the time you spend on yourself: exercising, relaxing, learning (outside of your career). Maintenance- the time we spend eating, sleeping, grooming, etc.
3. Decide where you would like to be- take each category and create an attainable percentage of time goal for each one. Ask yourself when you would like to realistically accomplish that goal. If needed, set shorter stages of times and smaller increments of gains to build up to those goals.
4. Read 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. Where I learned how to get focused and manage my time effectively
5. Value exercise- You want to create a list of 5- 7 values that are most important to you. There are many ways to accomplish this. Here are two I use in my lessons. Left brain- pull a list of values from the web (or ask me for one) and continue to prioritize until you get to 5- 7. Right brain- draw a simple mind map with a circle in the middle and seven spokes. Then draw symbols or pictures of things you most value. If you cannot come up with a picture, you can write the word with your non-dominant hand.
6. What goals align with those values? Look at the goals that best line up with the values you have chosen. To get me to dig deeper, a friend of mine would ask me, what does good look like? Make sure those goals are specific, measurable, and attainable.
7. What actions support those goals? A good indicator of integrity is if our actions match our words and plans. You know what’s important, and have a standard of what it will look like. What actions will you employ to share with the world who you are and how you want to show up.
8. Read “Fully Present” by Susan L. Smalley, Ph.D., and Diana Winston- a very practical guide that will make your life joyful, creative, and healthy.
9. Check out Brendon Burchard’s 5x50 Productivity formula- the most on-target process for being more productive in all aspects of your life. You can find it on his website, along with other helpful tips.
