Labor Day 2018

For us in North America, Labor Day is the last summer weekend holiday. It signals the time to get back to work, go to school, plan for fall harvest, etc.

It is also a day to celebrate the workforce and their vital contributions to our economy. I was brought up in a family that worked hard for what they got. We appreciated the sweat and effort it took to reach a goal. It seemed to make the achievement more significant.

There are other ways to make goals that are more cerebral. Brilliant people come up with ideas, inventions, creations that solve problems, make profits, and create excitement.

There are also contributions to our economy by people with specific talents. They entertain and amaze us with their skills, art, and athleticism.

Those of you that reach your goals through special talents, creative processes, or intellect have often been labeled as “gifted” or even “lucky” because of the lack of perceived hard work it takes versus the financial returns that are reported publicly. I have witnessed the hours of dedication it takes to become one of the very few to be successful this way. For every success, there must be several bright, talented people who did not make it.

Labor Day was created to celebrate all contributors in the workforce- no matter what you do or what your chosen field of work is. I respect all of you. I am proud of the hard work I put into my career and grateful for the breaks I got and people that helped me when hard work was not enough.

This is a time to celebrate. My favorite Labor Day memories involved spending this weekend on the shores of Lake Michigan, near Ludington Michigan, with my wife’s family. How about you? How do you celebrate this day??
