As I look back at my life, (I do every year around this time), I have much to celebrate. 1980 was a huge year for me. Two of the top 10 events in my life I am most proud of happened that year.
First, was the day my bride committed to a life with me, 42 years ago and still going strong.
The other was that 2 months before that I graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Hospitality Management. That degree has been an essential building block in the 50 years I have been in the food service business.
When I started working in 1972 neither of those two accomplishments seemed possible. I was full of self- doubt, drugs, and alcohol. I was not achieving the results I was capable of; despite the huge support I was getting from my family and close friends. I had such a poor view of myself, I knew that I would screw up any female relationship I would try to start.
I found cooking that year (1972) at Southwest Oakland Vocational Center which gave me a solid trade skill for employment, money, and self-worth.
During the next 8 years, I slowly turned myself around (with the love and support of many). Two key components on this journey of growth were my culinary degree from Schoolcraft Community College and meeting my wife Minnie (who I referred to earlier).
Since the 1980’s launching pad, I added several other top 10 events:
1983 quitting alcohol and drugs
1986 had 2 events- the birth of our son Stephan, and starting at Sysco
1990- Becoming the Midwest Regional Training Director at Sysco
1993- the miraculous birth of our daughter Jessica
1999- Buying a beautiful Log home in the middle of 12 acres of woods
2003- the start of my business “Rein’s Life in Balance, LLC”
2019- our move to Colorado
We don’t always know what choices will shape our lives when we are faced with it. Some form of solid planning, a huge support group, and staying flexible when our plans are not enough. Here is to the next 34 years, stay healthy.
