Finding your space in the world

I am writing this on a lull during my volunteering as a docent for the educational cabin at Viestenz- Smith Mountain Park outside of Loveland, Colorado. Nestled part way up the Big Thompson Canyon it has mountains all around, and a beautiful river that snakes its way through it. It is a sunny day in the mid-'80s, with enough shade to escape the mid-day heat. I have found my space & place in the world.

Some of my friends enjoy coming out to Colorado in the winter to ski. Others prefer the white sand beaches of Florida, the rainforests of the Northwest, the canyons of the Southwest, old-growth forests of the North, the Great Lakes, Appalachia, Ozarks, etc. Others are into the urban bustle of the big cities like New York, LA, or Chicago.

Whatever your groove, when you are there, you experience something you cannot find anywhere else. The mountains give me a natural high, (no wisecracks about Colorado and being high please), and a respect for nature. How the weather can change from a sunny day to a raging snowstorm quickly. In 2013, the park I am sitting in was destroyed by a flash flood by the same beautiful, melodic river I am admiring today.

As humans, it is important to figure out your space in the world, the type of career that excites you, the friends that support you, and the hobbies that fulfill you. When we find these spaces it builds our confidence. We tend to look at things from a positive perspective and enjoy our lives more often.

That prepares us to better handle the uncontrollable events that we face. Certainly, since 2020, we have faced adversity like no other time I can remember. It was sure nice to have my partner of 40 years to shelter with, good friends and family only a phone call away, and a beautiful natural area to explore.

Find your people. Find your place. Find your space, and spend as much time as you can there because ... You deserve it!
